Background :

The Baja Man derived its name from its founder, Peter Anthony, who became known as "The Baja Man". He was the first American to manufacture in Mexico and import the Baja shirts, which are the woven, hooded poncho - like pull overs, seen worn on the beaches of California to the parks of New York City by people of all ages, from the followers of the Grateful Dead (Deadheads) to the casual wear of the yuppified Harvard Graduate. Peter Anthony grew up in the multi pluralistic environs of NYC. A serious football injury cut short an aspiring professional baseball career as a top collegiate prospect. He moved to Northern California and worked for a short while with the police department and then decided to go back to school doing graduate and post graduate work in the fields of Sports Kinesiology and Nutrition. Co-mingled with his education he traveled, lived and taught in New York, Switzerland, Greece and other European countries. Blessed, with a wonderful close knit family and a mother who worked for Pan Am he traveled the world as an adventurer. Along the way, he established friendships with people of all cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Eventually his travels motivated his ambition to travel and import handcrafts from around the world.

Peter Anthony became one of the largest importer of handcrafts in the US. & sold to one of a kind specialty shops, boutiques & large chains such as Bloomingdales, Nordstroms & Pier 1 Imports. A major theft by one of his employees forced him into bankruptcy, loosing every- thing including his home & eventually leading to a divorce. Taking on the most challenging yet joyful responsibility of his life, as a single parent, he raised a 2 1/2 old son, while working out of his home to establish designs for the back of the Baja shirts. On a small amount of borrowed money he did trade shows with logo designed Bajas. People then requested logos on T-shirts, golf shirts, etc. printed & or embroidered. The seed was planted. While raising his child & working with his main love, children, he volunteered his time teaching & working with children through sports. He taught himself intensely the silk-screening, embroidery & advertising specialties business. He started jobbing out his work, then worked out of a small garage. Finally through extreme work ethics, motivation and a desire to raise his child, The Baja man grew into one of the most successful and diversified silkscreen and embroidery business in the country based on honesty, integrity with a focus on customer service.
